Kangaroo on your hip (Frog position)

Wearing your baby on the hip is a good compromise for the wearer that is uneasy with a dorsal position or when baby starts to want to always look towards the front or he starts to be a bit too big to be placed in the front. All hip positions, though, may cause an off balance charge on the body and so are less comfortable for prolonged lengths of time. The kangaroo position on your hip is the most adequate with a long wrap. It permits you to distribute a little bit more weight over the hips than with a ring sling (short wrap, pocket or adjustable sling) but is more difficult to adjust.

Here are the basic steps in understanding how to knot the Kangaroo on your hip (Frog position):

Start by taking the baby in your arms or bring baby to your hip already swaddled. The advantage is that baby is already well wrapped and supported besides being in a comfortable position while you are doing the knotting.

Always keep one hand under your baby and with the other reach for the upper edge in the back.

Keeping it taut fold by fold until the whole wrap is taut in your hand.

Once the adjustments have been made, place the wrap under babies’ bottom to be able to work on the other side of the wrap.

You can pass the other side of the wrap over the front shoulder

,
For your comfort, you must then grab the lower edge, the one that passes under the babies’ knees, and fold your elbow to double over the material over your shoulder near your neck.   Then, like the tummy kangaroo, grab the upper edge on babies back and pull it towards the outside so it is completely turned over on your shoulder.

Pull on the outside edge to adjust the tension in the back of your baby.

Change hands.

With the other hand, in your back grab the edge that passes near your neck.

Adjust the tension fold by fold by bringing all the material together in your hand..

Don’t let too much material slack down on your arm while doing this. Once the wrap is snug against baby, the material will form a second skin over his back and your shoulder will be well supported. At this moment, you can take your hand out from under the baby and retighten by pulling on the two sides of the wrap towards the front.

Cross the two panels under the babies’ bottom.

Bring the material behind you passing under the legs of your baby.

You can do a knot on each of your hips.
